Hells Angel associate will be charged after two AK-47 assault rifles were allegedly found in his Sydney home.

Wednesday, 17 August 2011

Police said they found the banned weapons in an insecure safe at a home on Claremont Street, Merrylands, on Friday.

The 43-year-old man had his firearms licence suspended and he will be charged with two counts of possessing prohibited weapons.

The AK-47 is a lightweight, automatic rifle known to be the weapon of choice for members of the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

The rifles were allegedly found in the Sydney home during one of many inspections of firearm safes by Strike Force Raptor, which targets bikie gang activity.

Meanwhile, police say they and Corrective Services conducted a joint operation at Silverwater jail in Sydney yesterday.

Officers attached to Strike Force Raptor and the Joint Correctives Services Emergency Response Unit conducted an operation targeting outlaw motorcycle gang members and illegal drugs.

The operation was targeting the introduction of drugs and other contraband into the prison.

Using a Corrective Services drug detection dog, 633 visitors were screened and 63 people searched including a number of known outlaw motorcycle gang associates, police said.

Eleven people were denied entry to the prison while Strike Force Raptor officers arrested and charged two people with the possession of cannabis and amphetamines.

An amount of ecstasy tablets were also found dumped outside the prison.

Police issued five traffic infringement notices, three parking infringement notices and confiscated one vehicle.

One person was also taken to hospital to undergo blood tests after being suspected of driving under the influence of prohibited drugs.
